President William Ruto has for the first time publicly addressed the ongoing troubles facing former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju, sharply criticising what he termed as political opportunism surrounding the matter.

Speaking during a rally in Migori County on Tuesday, March 24, the Head of State accused sections of the opposition of misleading Tuju and taking advantage of his current challenges for political mileage.

Ruto claimed that some individuals allegedly advised Tuju to stage-manage his disappearance.

“Even recently, they went to lie to Tuju. They told him to hide in his bedroom and pretend that he had been abducted. Just imagine,” the President told the crowd.

Ruto emphasised that the former Jubilee Secretary General requires genuine support and honest counsel rather than manipulation. He maintained that Tuju’s situation should not be turned into a political tool.

“Tuju needs honest friends and proper advice. He should be helped, not surrounded by scavengers feeding on his misfortune,” he added.

The President also took aim at opposition leaders, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, accusing them of attempting to benefit politically from Tuju’s predicament. He urged them to step aside and allow a proper resolution process.

In addition, Ruto cautioned against dragging former President Uhuru Kenyatta into the saga, dismissing claims linking him to the unfolding events.

The President’s remarks come a day after Tuju was arrested by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) over allegations of staging his own abduction. Authorities stated that he had been at his residence while police were searching for him.

Following his arrest, Tuju was taken to Karen Police Station before being rushed to Karen Hospital after his health reportedly deteriorated, with his lawyers alleging mistreatment while in custody.
