Okiya Omtatah Okoiti, the senator for Busia, has issued a strong warning to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission following complaints raised by youths over delays in voter registration.
In a recent social media post, Omtatah urged the electoral body to stop the delays and ensure the system works efficiently.
He emphasized that the youth deserve a seamless nationwide registration process that allows them to exercise their democratic rights without unnecessary hurdles.
“Young people, register in large numbers. Your vote is your power. Protect your future. Own 2027,” Omtatah stated.
He further called on the commission to make registration smooth and asked citizens to report any delays while holding the IEBC accountable.
The message comes after youths in areas such as Thika voiced frustrations during attempts to register as voters. In a video that circulated widely, young people expressed disappointment with the process, describing it as frustrating and unacceptable.
They highlighted issues including system failures, long waits, and inadequate preparation at registration centers.
These concerns have emerged amid a growing youth-driven campaign encouraging mass registration ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Many young Kenyans have shown renewed interest in participating in the electoral process, turning up in significant numbers at various centers despite the reported challenges.
Omtatah’s intervention underscores the importance of an efficient voter registration exercise as Kenya prepares for the next polls.
Political observers note that timely and accessible registration is crucial for enhancing youth participation, which has historically been lower than desired.
The senator’s call reflects broader demands for accountability from the electoral commission to ensure that logistical issues do not discourage first-time or young voters.
As the registration window continues, stakeholders expect the IEBC to address these complaints promptly to build public confidence in the system.
