President William Ruto has ordered a nationwide emergency response after heavy rains caused a second wave of flash floods in Nairobi and other regions. The government is coordinating rescue and evacuation efforts for those affected.
Ruto said multi-agency teams, including emergency services, security, and humanitarian groups, are working closely with county governments. He emphasized that food supplies, medical assistance, and other support are being delivered to all affected families.
The president urged Kenyans to follow guidance from the Kenya Meteorological Department and the police. He said authorities are monitoring the situation and taking every step to protect lives and support communities.
The floods on Saturday, March 14, disrupted movement across Nairobi. Drainage systems were overwhelmed, leaving roads like Limuru Road, Lusaka Road, Bunyala Road, and parts of the Nairobi Expressway impassable.
Areas affected include the CBD, Parklands, Ngong Road near Ngando, Lower Kabete, Kibera, Kilimani, South B, Kawangware, and Lang’ata.
The Kenya Red Cross reported that the Nairobi River and Ngong River both overflowed, causing flooding in areas that rarely face such problems. Vehicles were stranded in floodwaters, and some roads were rendered dangerous.
Nairobi Water said ongoing heavy rains have delayed repair work on damaged pipelines along Outering Road. Safety concerns have prevented repair crews from completing the work. Authorities hope to resume repairs once weather conditions improve.
Ruto assured citizens that government departments will continue issuing advisories to ensure preparedness and safety. He expressed sympathy for families already affected and called for vigilance as the heavy rains continue to threaten lives and livelihoods.
The president’s directive shows a commitment to a coordinated response to natural disasters. Agencies are working together to prevent further damage and ensure affected communities receive timely help.
Citizens are advised to remain alert, avoid flooded areas, and cooperate with emergency teams until the situation stabilizes.
