Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Affairs Minister Musalia Mudavadi has travelled to Russia for high-level bilateral talks, with discussions expected to focus heavily on the situation involving Kenyan citizens allegedly recruited into the Russian military.

According to official statements released on Sunday, March 15, Mudavadi departed for Moscow on a two-day working visit aimed at strengthening diplomatic and economic relations between Kenya and Russia.

His meetings are also expected to address concerns raised in recent weeks about Kenyans who were reportedly lured into joining the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The Kenyan government has previously expressed concern over reports that some nationals travelled abroad through unofficial channels and later ended up in military camps or combat zones.

Authorities have described the situation as troubling and have vowed to pursue diplomatic solutions to protect affected citizens. The Moscow visit is therefore seen as part of ongoing efforts to engage Russian officials directly on the matter.

Beyond the recruitment issue, the talks are expected to explore broader areas of cooperation, including education partnerships, labour mobility agreements, health collaboration, infrastructure development, and energy.

Government officials have emphasized that Kenya continues to pursue balanced international relations while safeguarding the welfare of its citizens abroad.

The visit comes at a time when the issue of Kenyans allegedly involved in foreign conflicts has sparked national debate, with families, lawmakers, and human rights groups calling for clarity and stronger protections.

Diplomatic observers say the engagement in Moscow reflects Kenya’s preference for dialogue in resolving sensitive international matters.

As discussions unfold, attention will remain focused on the outcome of the meetings and whether concrete agreements will be reached to address concerns about recruitment practices and strengthen bilateral ties between the two nations.
