Total Disquiet in State House as Junet Mohammed Takes a U-turn to Join Edwin Sifuna

The political landscape within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has been fundamentally altered as Minority Leader Junet Mohamed reportedly takes a strategic "U-turn" to align with the "Linda Mwananchi" faction led by Edwin Sifuna.

Presiding over the party's first Parliamentary Group (PG) meeting of 2026 on March 3, Junet appeared to shift away from the "Linda Ground" wing—which has been heavily associated with the pro-government "broad-based" cooperation—to advocate for a more independent and combative opposition stance.

This realignment has sent waves of disquiet through the State House, where the administration has been banking on a unified ODM to support its legislative agenda.

By siding with the Sifuna-Babu Owino axis, Junet is effectively signaling that the party's core legislative strength will not be used as a bargaining chip for executive favors.

During the high-stakes meeting at Parliament Buildings, Junet was firm in his declaration that ODM’s parliamentary numbers are non-negotiable for any future political arrangements.

He emphasized that the party’s focus must return to expanding its own legislative footprint ahead of the 2027 general election, rather than serving as a subsidiary of the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

This position directly contradicts the "structured negotiations" recently endorsed by the pro-handshake wing of the party.

Junet’s leadership at the PG meeting, where he read resolutions that prioritized party autonomy over coalition mandates, suggests he is positioning himself as a bridge between the party’s traditional activists and its modern reformers, effectively muzzling the narrative that the opposition has been "sold" to the state.

The implications of this move are profound, as Junet has long been considered a key strategist for the ODM top brass and a primary link to regional kingpins.

His apparent endorsement of the Sifuna-led faction's agendas—including a review of the 10-point progress report on March 10—undermines the authority of those seeking a permanent merger with the government.

By mobilizing the Young Turk legacy alongside his own minority leader mandate, Junet is creating a powerful new power center that threatens to dismantle the influence of State House remote control over the opposition.

As the National Delegates Conference on March 27 approaches, this tactical U-turn ensures that Junet Mohamed remains a central and unpredictable figure in the battle for the soul of the 14th Parliament.
