Wetang’ula at the Center of Intensifying Political Storm as Calls Grow Louder for Him to Do This

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula is facing mounting political pressure as calls intensify for him to dissolve Ford Kenya and fold it into the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), led by President William Ruto.

The push, coming from a section of leaders within the Kenya Kwanza coalition, is stirring debate about the future of smaller parties in the alliance.

In recent days, several politicians allied to UDA have openly urged Wetang’ula to consider the merger, arguing that a unified party would strengthen the coalition ahead of the 2027 General Election.

They claim that consolidating political outfits under one umbrella could improve coordination, reduce internal competition, and present a stronger front against the opposition.

However, the proposal has not been without resistance. Supporters of Ford Kenya, one of the country’s oldest political parties, see the move as a threat to its identity and legacy.

Founded decades ago, the party has played a significant role in Kenya’s political history, particularly in championing multiparty democracy. Critics of the merger argue that dissolving it would erase an important part of that heritage.

Wetang’ula, who also serves as the party leader, has so far maintained a cautious stance, avoiding a direct response to the growing calls. Political observers note that his position as Speaker places him in a delicate spot, requiring him to balance party interests with his national leadership role.

The debate comes at a time when political realignments are beginning to take shape, with parties quietly strategizing ahead of the next election cycle. Analysts say the outcome could signal a broader trend of consolidation within Kenya’s political landscape.

As discussions continue, attention remains firmly on Wetang’ula and the decision he may ultimately make—one that could redefine not only his party’s future but also the dynamics within the ruling coalition.
