Kisumu Senator Tom Ojienda has publicly acknowledged the growing political influence of Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, describing him as a “good” and charismatic leader while offering a broader reflection on the future of leadership in the Lake Region.

Speaking during a televised interview, Ojienda—who is associated with the pro-government “Linda Ground” faction within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM)—said that Babu Owino’s recent political appearances, especially at a rally in Kisumu County, demonstrated undeniable popularity and influence.

He noted that the MP, who has roots in Kisumu’s Nyalenda area, continues to command strong emotional and political connections both in his hometown and in Nairobi.

According to Ojienda, Babu Owino’s ability to draw large crowds reflects growing recognition of his leadership potential.

However, the senator was quick to temper speculation that Babu Owino could emerge as the sole “kingpin” of Nyanza politics.

He argued that the region is entering a new political era where leadership is likely to be shared among multiple influential figures rather than concentrated in one individual.

Ojienda suggested that the era of a single dominant regional leader may be fading following the long tenure of former ODM leader Raila Odinga, who for decades held significant influence across the region. He implied that no single successor is likely to replicate that level of unified control.

Instead, he predicted a more fragmented political structure where different leaders will command influence in specific areas or constituencies.

In that scenario, he said, figures like Babu Owino could become dominant in urban political spaces such as Nairobi rather than controlling an entire region.

The remarks highlight ongoing debates within ODM about succession, generational leadership, and regional influence as the party navigates a changing political landscape ahead of the 2027 General Election.

While Ojienda’s comments were largely positive toward Babu Owino, they also reflect deeper uncertainties about how leadership structures in Nyanza and within ODM will evolve in the post-Raila era.
