The Orange Democratic Movement has spoken out over the unfolding fuel importation scandal, firmly denouncing the misuse of public resources while urging calm as investigations continue.

In a statement released on April 7, party leader Oburu Odinga expressed concern about the alleged irregularities in the petroleum sector, warning that such actions worsen the economic strain already facing many households.

He noted that fuel remains central to daily life and business activity, making any misconduct in the sector especially damaging to the public.

The party acknowledged the pressure from various quarters calling for accountability, particularly demands for the resignation of Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi.

However, ODM cautioned against rushing to conclusions before investigations are completed. According to the statement, public attacks directed at senior officials risk turning a serious matter into a political contest instead of allowing due process to take its course.

ODM also welcomed the steps taken by investigative agencies, including the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, noting that early action sends a message that corruption cases will not be ignored.

At the same time, the party commended President William Ruto for allowing the inquiry to proceed without interference, describing this as a sign of commitment to transparency.

At the heart of the controversy is a multi billion shilling deal involving the importation of millions of litres of fuel said to fall below required standards.

Reports indicate that the consignment contained harmful levels of substances such as sulfur and benzene, raising concerns about both environmental safety and consumer protection.

Several senior officials linked to the Ministry of Energy and related agencies have already been questioned, with some stepping aside as investigations intensify.

Despite growing political pressure, ODM maintained that accountability must be guided by evidence. The party stressed that any individual found responsible should face the law, regardless of their position or political ties.

It also called for unity among leaders and citizens, warning that constant public accusations and political rallies could derail efforts to uncover the truth.

Meanwhile, Trade Cabinet Secretary Lee Kinyanjui and Wandayi have both defended their actions, insisting that all procedures followed were lawful.

Wandayi further assured the public that fuel supply across the country remains stable and that there is no immediate risk of shortages.
