Mining and Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho has spoken out on the leadership of the Orange Democratic Movement, affirming his support for Oburu Odinga as the party's leader.

In remarks broadcast by KBC Channel 1 on February 16, 2026, Joho reflected on his long tenure as deputy party leader under the late Raila Odinga.

Joho stated that he served for ten years as Raila Odinga's deputy party leader. He questioned why he would not be suitable or interested in becoming party leader himself, noting that he feels capable and willing.

However, he emphasized that the party had taught him the value of respect and honor. He declared that the party's leader is Oburu Odinga, and therefore it is Oburu.

The comments come in the context of recent internal developments in ODM, including the ouster of former secretary general Edwin Sifuna amid debates over the party's direction, its participation in the broad-based government, and negotiations with the ruling United Democratic Alliance ahead of the 2027 elections.

Oburu Odinga was confirmed as party leader by the Registrar of Political Parties in early February 2026, following Raila Odinga's passing.

Joho's statement appears to signal unity and acceptance of the current leadership structure, even as he positions himself as a potential future contender.

He has previously expressed presidential ambitions for 2032, while backing Oburu in the interim and engaging in coalition talks.

His words reinforce backing for Oburu amid factional tensions, particularly in the Coast region where Joho holds strong influence.

This intervention highlights efforts to stabilize ODM following leadership transitions and divisions over strategy.

With Oburu leading negotiations and figures like Joho playing key roles, the party seeks to maintain cohesion while pursuing influence in government arrangements. The message underscores loyalty to established hierarchies as ODM navigates its path forward.
