Police have dropped all charges against a man accused of posing as a woman to swindle men for money. After investigations found no criminal or “unnatural” acts, he walked free. The case sparked debate online and left many asking questions about identity and law enforcement.

The man, Elias Tembo, was detained on January 28, 2026 after police said he was masquerading as a woman named “Rita Jere” at a nightclub to attract men and receive cash. Cops suspected he used the disguise to deceive clients for monetary gain.

Following his arrest, police carried out medical tests and inquiries. Former Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba confirmed that the results showed no evidence of criminal or “unnatural” offences. With nothing to charge him with, Tembo was released and reunited with family in Chigogo village.

Part of the inquiry found that Tembo had once been in a seven-day relationship with a man who believed Tembo was female. Family members told police that Tembo was born male, and there were no legal grounds for detention.

The case gained attention on social media, where users shared mixed reactions. Some questioned how anyone could be fooled, while others laughed at the situation’s bizarre twist.

This incident highlights challenges police face in cases involving identity and consent. Investigators must balance public concern with legal standards and human rights.

Not every unusual behaviour is a crime. Police must rely on clear legal definitions before making arrests, and communities should be cautious about spreading rumours online.
