Embakasi East MP Babu Owino on Saturday stepped in to rescue a young man who was nearly attacked after attempting to interrupt the Linda Mwananchi rally at Amalemba grounds.
The situation escalated shortly after Siaya Governor James Orengo addressed the crowd, criticizing ODM’s backing of President William Ruto and inviting Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna to speak.
As emotions ran high, sections of the crowd turned hostile toward the youth, accusing him of trying to derail the gathering. Owino quickly pulled him onto the podium and arranged for his immediate transfer to a nearby hospital, likely preventing serious harm.
Tension deepened when restless residents began chanting and police responded by firing teargas to disperse the surging crowd. Despite the confusion, Senator Sifuna urged calm and appealed to young people to refrain from violence, insisting the rally would proceed peacefully.
Witnesses described chaotic scenes, with people fleeing from teargas while others attempted to remain and follow the speeches. Several attendees were treated for minor injuries and breathing complications as security officers tightened control around the venue.
The rally, viewed as a protest against ODM’s recent political direction, has sparked nationwide debate. Observers say the incident may fuel broader discussions about political freedoms and public assembly ahead of the 2027 elections. The rescued youth is reported to be in stable condition.
