President William Ruto has begun a five-day tour of the Nyanza region, rolling out a series of development projects in what is widely seen as a strategic push to win support ahead of the 2027 General Election.

During today’s itinerary, the Head of State is expected to launch the construction of the Naivasha–Kisumu–Malaba Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) extension at 9:30am.

The project is expected to boost trade and improve connectivity across the region. He will later proceed to Siaya County to commission the Yala Affordable Housing project.

However, attention remains firmly on Siaya Governor James Orengo, with uncertainty surrounding whether he will be present to receive the President during his visits to Dho Goye in Bondo and the Yala project in Gem.

Observers note that the tour carries significant political weight, especially in Luo Nyanza, a region that has traditionally supported opposition politics.

The visit is seen as an opportunity for Kenya Kwanza to strengthen its presence, with sections of ODM leadership led by Oburu Oginga expected to play a key role in influencing local support.

The developments come amid growing political divisions, with a section of leaders including Orengo pushing an anti-government campaign dubbed “Linda Mwananchi.”

Analysts warn that a divided ODM could complicate efforts by President Ruto to secure unified backing from the region.

At the same time, Governor Orengo has raised concerns over the implementation of the 10-point agenda signed in 2025 between President Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. According to Orengo, several key issues outlined in the agreement are yet to be addressed.
