A heavy police presence was witnessed this morning at Ufungamano House in Nairobi ahead of a planned National Delegates Conference (NDC) by a faction of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), sparking fresh concerns over the State’s response to internal party dissent.
The deployment comes amid heightened political tension within ODM, following the emergence of a splinter group under the Linda Mwananchi banner.
The faction, led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, and Siaya Governor James Orengo, has openly opposed the party’s recent decision to support President William Ruto’s administration.
The group had earlier announced plans to convene a parallel NDC at Ufungamano House, in what appeared to be a direct challenge to the official ODM leadership. However, the unexpected police deployment has cast uncertainty over whether the meeting will proceed as planned.
On the other hand, the ODM leadership aligned with party leader Oburu Odinga had also scheduled its own NDC meeting for the same day, further deepening the internal standoff.
The rival gatherings highlight growing divisions within the party, once considered a strong pillar of opposition politics in Kenya.
Sources within the Linda Mwananchi team indicated that they may be forced to change the venue due to the security situation.
Leaders allied to the faction have condemned the police presence, terming it as intimidation and an attempt to suppress internal democracy.
