Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has publicly declared his readiness to form a political coalition with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) under Oburu Odinga, on the condition that President William Ruto is excluded from any arrangement.
Speaking in remarks captured by The Kenya Times, Gachagua, now leader of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), stated:
"I am willing to work with like-minded people and ODM, together with Oburu Odinga, as long as there is no involvement of President William Ruto."
The declaration comes amid intense political repositioning ahead of the 2027 general election. Gachagua emphasized his commitment to building an alternative front, highlighting fractures in Kenya’s political landscape following his 2024 impeachment and the passing of long-time ODM leader Raila Odinga.
Since assuming leadership of ODM, Oburu Odinga has consistently dismissed coalition talks with Gachagua, insisting that uniting with the former Deputy President is “not an option” and instead reaffirming ties with Ruto’s administration.
Earlier this year, Gachagua met with Oburu and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka in Machakos, sparking speculation of a broader opposition realignment. However, no formal coalition has emerged, and internal ODM divisions continue to intensify.
Since leaving office, Gachagua has focused on consolidating support in the Mt. Kenya region, positioning himself as a central opposition voice.
His latest statements appear aimed at testing the waters for a “united opposition” coalition, potentially bringing together DCP, ODM factions, and other like-minded groups to challenge the incumbent government in 2027.
Political analysts note that ODM’s upcoming National Delegates Conference will likely clarify the party’s stance—whether it maintains cooperation with Ruto’s government or opens the door to alternative alliances.
Gachagua’s latest remarks could force a more definitive response, especially as factional battles within ODM continue.
